We held our FIRST EVER! farmer’s market booth last weekend at the Leslieville Farmer’s Market on Queen Street East near Coxwell! What fun! Our vermi-technology expert Glenn Munroe joined us in teaching folks about worm composting, sharing info about Green Bins Growing office food waste recycling and educating market-goers on the high value of worm castings biofertilizer. Our box of “demo worms” was a huge hit with kids who loved playing with the worms!
We sold $10 and $20 bags of worm castings biofertilizer (great as an end-of-season mulch) and a lucky new worm-mom went home with a 1/2lb of worm babies to raise in her basement. By feeding them kitchen scraps all winter, she’ll have plenty of worm castings biofertilizer to add to her garden next spring!
The Leslieville Farmer’s Market is renowned as one of the best markets in the city, with a wide variety of vendors, fresh and prepared foods, and free entertainment for the children. It’s also considered one of the “greenest” markets about town, with many organic and all-natural products for sale.
We were invited to have a booth free-of-charge through the New Farmer program, a great initiative coordinated by Leslieville Market’s Daniel Green. The opportunity allowed us to gain “market experience” in a low-risk, low-commitment way, which is just what a small startup like us needed! Thank you to Janaki Hadida for recommending us for the program!
The booth was a great learning experience and we can’t wait until the next opportunity for us to hit the streets – probably not until Spring 2016 as the season is winding down. Let us know if you have a favourite Toronto farmer’s market where you would like to see us booth!
